The Women of Gettysburg –
Heroines of the Civil War

Woman and a Union soldier

These are the inspiring stories of the women who lived through the Battle of Gettysburg – the well-known and the little known.

Your guide will lead you through the back streets of Gettysburg and tell of the ordinary women who changed the course of history in extraordinary ways.

Learn about the women who, without formal training in nursing, volunteered to do what they could for the Union and Confederate wounded in the makeshift field hospitals occupying every large building in Gettysburg.

Meet the women who donned uniforms and served in battle beside their men – even to being wounded or killed.

Hear of the women who wrote books and traveled the U.S. on lecture tours about the Gettysburg battle, keeping alive the memories of the solders who fought there.

Learn about the longest love story of the Civil War.

Listen to how the meek ones found their courage, the young ones their maturity, the tender ones their strength – and how they all gave from their hearts to save the lives of soldiers and protect their families.

These are the stories to be remembered of the quiet sacrifice, the selfless kindness, and the enduring resilience of the women of Gettysburg.

A family-friendly tour for visitors of all ages.

Salome Myers Stewart, one of the Gettysburg heroines remembered on the “Women of Gettysburg” walking tour, kept a diary during the battle. Her book, The Ties of the Past is available in The Great T Shirt Company.
